7 Ways For College Students To Go Green

ICYMI: Earth Day was on April 22nd! It’s great to have a day dedicated to appreciating our home and all it does for even us, and even better to spend some time doing service that will benefit the environment. But Earth Day shouldn’t just be a single day… it should be a lifestyle. It’s never too late to make some positive changes in your life, but it can be difficult for college students to know where to start. Here are some tips for making your life a little more Earth-conscious and environmentally-friendly:

1. Reduce plastic.

Whether this means stocking up on Tupperware or getting a re-fillable water bottle, this is a great way to make an impact.

2. Turn off the lights when you leave the room.

Electric waste is just that… a waste. If you’re not using lights, turn them off and save that energy!

3. Recycle (and compost).

One of the great things about Towson’s campus is that it’s super easy to recycle and compost, especially in our dining halls. Instead of dumping your trash in one bin, pay attention to what goes where.

4. Try going meatless for a day, or even a meal!

You don’t need to go full vegan to make a difference. Try cutting meat out of your diet for even just one meal or day. Meat production is a huge drain on environmental resources, so this is an easy way to impact your world.

5. Carpool, walk, or bike.

With the weather getting warmer, try and kill three birds with one stone: get outside, get some exercise, and limit the amount of exhaust emissions in the air. Also, grabbing a ride with a friend or using public transportation is another easy way to make a change.

6. Go electronic… but be mindful.

Technology has the potential to help the environment tremendously. Instead of wasting paper, transfer information using e-mail or text or opt into taking your notes online. But when you’re finished charging your electronics, unplug them (and unplug your cord!). Powering off can save a ton of energy.

7. Get educated and involved.

It’s easy to make a change if you know where to look. Check out TU’s Urban Farm, volunteer in Baltimore, try your hand at gardening, and be mindful about the choices you make. Let’s appreciate our Earth for longer than just one day every year!
