Last Friday April 14th, 2017, Modelz of Distinction hosted its annual Spring Fashion Showcase in West Village Commons Ballrooms. If you are unfamiliar with this student-run organization, Modelz of Distinction, affectionately known as MOD, is a fashion and modeling troupe who prides themselves in”maintaining its brand of excellence through professionally executed fashion shows, involvement on campus, and community service.” Not only are the basics of modeling taught, but MOD strives to create long lasting relationships that encourage confidence building, and inspire members to pursue new endeavors.
In this sixth year of the organization, MOD succeeded in yet another Spring Fashion Show, which might be their best one yet! After working towards getting out of a $5,000 deficit, MOD has worked efficiently to reestablish themselves financially, socially, and aesthetically. It has been a long road for this organization, but their recent fashion show was a true depiction of the phrase “hard work pays off”.
This years show was entitled Cirque du MODe, which translates to “fashion circus” in French. The team has been working since January in their efforts of meshing a high fashion runway show to the energy and entertainment of the circus.
Take a look at this quick behind the scene’s clip for their inspiration towards the show.
The entire set up, from the entrance of the fourth floor, to the inside of the ballrooms was spot on! The side hall way served as a red carpet walkway where student volunteers acted as clowns, and contortionists while greeting guests as they entered. The inside of the ballrooms utterly surprised the guests as they found a large video runway at the top of the runway giving a very NY Fashion Week feel.
As great as the interior looked, the fashion show matched this intensity. The show began with performances from members of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc., Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc., and Iota Phi Theta Fraternity Inc.
The Modelz graced the runway with their white stripper heels, and Dr. Marten boots, displaying fashion lines from various designers across the east coast. The female models, known as MOD Divaz, wore long red wigs with fish tail braids, and an animated clown makeup look to add to the look.
Some highlights included the “Haus of Androgyny” scene where the female and male Modelz switched roles as the males wore the stripper heels, and the males played the male role. Performances from Killa Motions Dance Company, and Models Inc. kept the crowd on edge, and the energy at an all time high. And lets talk about the visuals! For each scene, the video wall incorporated photo shoots from the Modelz exhibiting each scene, as well as clips, and visual effects to add to the 60″ white runway. Finally, the crowning of the new executive board concluded the show as the current board will be stepping down due to their upcoming commencement ceremonies.
MOD’s Spring Fashion Show has been lauded from various students, organizations, and outside modeling figures who have praised the team for their creative, and thorough approach to a fashion circus. Kudos to MOD and their entire Executive Board for yet another noteworthy fashion show! For more pictures and videos from the show visit MOD via social media on Instagram at @modelzofdistinction!
