5 Things To Do When You’re Feeling Stressed

I think we’re quickly approaching that time in the semester in which everything seems to pile up. Lately I’ve been feeling overwhelmed and I’m constantly tired. I’ve compiled a list of five things I like to do when I’m feeling stressed out.

  • Get an adult coloring book

So, at the beginning I wasn’t completely sold on this idea, but whenever I saw them displayed at the Barnes and Noble on York Road, I kept thinking that I should get one. I finally did, along with my set of coloring pencils, and now I carry them with me all the time. It takes your mind off of all the things you have to do and makes you concentrate on one thing.

  • Exercise

Now stay with me, believe me when I say there is nothing in this world that I despise more than exercising. But whenever I’m stuck or feeling overwhelmed, I just stretch out and I swear it takes some of the tension away.

  • Take a break

I find that whenever I’m feeling stressed, it’s because there’s too much going on at the same time. Take some time to take your mind off of the task at hand. I know there’s a due date, but listen to some music and dance! Or take a Netflix break and laugh at some comedy show!

  • Breathe

Okay, this is technically another exercise, but hear me out. Breathing in tells your brain to slow down and it lowers stress levels. Try this exercise the next time you’re in a stressful situation.

  1. Place the tip of your tongue against the ridge of tissue just behind your upper front teeth, and keep it there through the entire exercise.
  2. Exhale completely through your mouth, making a whoosh sound.
  3. Close your mouth and inhale quietly through your nose to a mental count of four.
  4. Hold your breath for a count of seven.
  5. Exhale completely through your mouth, making a whoosh sound to a count of eight.
  6. This is one breath. Now inhale again and repeat three more times for a total of four cycles.

This also works if you feel like you can’t sleep because your mind is racing, and it’ll relax you right away.

  • Take a hot shower/bath

When things aren’t going my way, I like to take a really really hot shower and just try to forget about it for a while. I don’t know what it is, but it works every time. Once I start working on the problem again, everything seems to flow!
