In the beginning of the spring semester, college students everywhere are newly motivated from a long winter break and excited to start out fresh. But once spring break comes and provides a much needed pause from midterms, early morning classes, and homework, the return to school has me feeling less motivated in school than ever before. Weather is warming up as the workload is increasing and summer just seems so far away. If you’re suffering from post-spring break blues like I am, here are a couple tips for you:
- Make Plans
This one seems like a no-brainer, but having plans and something to look forward to will keep you feeling excited and we all know that time flies when you’re having fun! Even if your plans involve catching up on homework, try getting a cubicle with friends in Cook Library or spreading out in Freedom Square. Knowing that you have something fun coming up — or at least making writing a paper or studying for an exam more bearable — will help the time pass.
2. Make a clear schedule
This is one of the most helpful things that you can do for yourself. Keep track of specific tasks that you need to get done and set aside some uninterrupted time to do them ahead of time. It’s easy to get into the mindset of pushing things off until later, but believe it or not, the end of the year (and finals) are not that far away! Schedule in time to be productive and time to relax; you’ll be less stressed and way ahead of the game.
3. Make healthy choices
I’m sure I’m not the only one who abandons my healthy habits when I’m stressed. After spring break, make sure you’re not sacrificing your good choices. It’s easy to grab Chick-Fil-A from Susq for the 4th day in a row or to veg out watching HGTV, but your body and mind will thank you if you prioritize eating healthier and getting some exercise choices. But, ya know, #treatyoself sometimes, too.
4. Let yourself take a break.
I could not stress this one enough. Take a break. Really. Between jobs, internships, extracurriculars, and classes, college students are stressed out and busy people! Let yourself go grab dinner with a friend, go outside, or go see a movie. Don’t wear yourself too thin and you’ll be thanking yourself later.
5. If all else fails, count down the days until we’re OUT!
If the post-spring break blues have really got you down, cross out a day every day leading up to summer break. It seems so far away, but we’re actually a lot closer than it feels! Keep your head up, Tigers; we can conquer the rest of this semester!
