Is leadership one of those qualities that people are born with or that is learned?
Regardless of the debate, we are exposed to the respected trait from when we are young rugrats to esteemed adults. One way we’re exposed to leadership is through movies. More than just cinematic adventures, movies explore human characteristics in creative ways. I have put together a list of 10 movies that demonstrate leadership in a nutshell from tearjerking Disney flicks to self-empowering superhero ones.
1. Remember the Titans (2000)
Sure, they are the Titans, but they earned the reputation of being the “mighty” Titans. Skin color is only a barrier that people choose to demolish or construct, but as a single team, anything can be overcome.
2. The Lion King (1994)
If childhood taught kids anything, it’s to remember who they are and that help is always available. When in doubt, look up to the stars for the wisdom of past kings. HAIL!
3. Unbroken (2014)
Leadership is palpable whether you earned it or not. The determination to live and prosper is a quality that does not go unnoticed.
4. Forrest Gump (1994)
A man who has an IQ of 75 was the star kick returner for Alabama State University, a war hero, a member of the All-American Ping Pong team, the captain of the country’s leading shrimping boat company, invested in Apple Inc. and led a group of people running across the country. Let that sink in the next time you think that you can’t do something.
5. Gladiator (2000)
MAXIMUS! MAXIMUS! MAXIMUS! Who does the king think he is to enter the Colosseum with the gladiator Maximus Decimus freakin’ Meridius. Do you really have a death wish, peasant?
6. Braveheart (1995)
I can guarantee you that at least one person every Halloween will be dressed as William Wallace. Who wouldn’t want to be a heroic Scotsman who plans a revolt against the iron fist of English tyranny? Kilt and face paint included.
7. The Hunger Games Trilogy (2012-2015)
Katniss Everdeen is the poster-child for pure underdog triumph. She has the leadership to overthrow government, save innocent peoples’ lives, and run a revolution all while keeping her braid in pristine condition. Share your hair care secrets!
8. Dead Poets Society (1989)
Oh, Captain, my Captain. Writing enables people to survive as respected leaders even after they pass because words never die.
9. Rocky (1976)
10. The Dark Knight Rises (2012)
Some leaders are spotlighted with fame and glory. Then there are other leaders who stay and wait in the shadows for their turn. Hey, Christopher Nolan, do you plan on making a Robin movie any time soon?
What type of leader are you? How have you embodied leadership qualities? Did you put those on your resume yet (hint, hint)? Whether we recognize it or not, pop culture has a way of shaping our ideas and beliefs. If these leadership-based movies have you inspired, stay tuned for the Oscars on Sunday, February 22 and the Spring Leadership Conference on March 28!
