I know what you’re thinking. ‘What the heck is The Big Event?’ Well, it’s Towson University’s largest day of community service. Last year over 800 students helped out homeowners in the area, raking, shoveling, painting fences, and doing yard work in order to give back to our community. This year is the fifth annual Big Event, so I’m letting you know 5 ways you can benefit from volunteering at The Big Event this year.
1. Give Back to the Towson Community
Our community has offered so much to us students. This is the perfect time to show them how much we appreciate them and all they have done for us (including putting up with us during Tigerfest weekend). This comment was written by a homeowner who is requesting student volunteers:
“Hi I am a single parent of a child who is very ill; I need a lot of help with the back yard, and the back deck needs to be painted with waterproofing. I am allergic to the gardening so any help at all would be appreciated. Thank you!”
Now if that doesn’t want to make you help out at this event, I don’t know what will.
2. Make New Friends
The Big Event, being Towson’s single largest day of community service, is a great way to meet new people and make personal connections. This year we plan on having 1,000 students participate in over 75 service projects in the area. It is also a great bonding activity for your club, sports team, friends, roommates, co-workers, fraternity, or sorority. (Don’t forget about those community service hours!)
3. Improve Your Health
Research shows that people who volunteer have lower depression and mortality rates, as well as greater functional ability. Additionally, volunteering can also boost your self-confidence, self-esteem and life satisfaction. You’re not only helping out others, you’re helping out yourself. It’s a win-win!
5. Strengthen Your Resume
Community service is a perfect way to bulk up your resume. If you don’t have too much relevant work experience, adding community service and volunteer opportunities is a great way to show prospective employers your variety of skills. Additionally, it shows what is important to you, thus giving them a glimpse of your character and work ethic.
Well, Ceanne, you’ve convinced me. Now how to I get involved?
